  4.     Iraq came under widespread criticism last year after it
  5. killed hundreds and perhaps thousands of Kurdish villagers with a
  6. chemical-weapons attack in the gulf war. Now U.S. officials
  7. confirm that Baghdad has been developing yet another form of
  8. warfare expressly banned by international law: biological
  9. weapons.

  11.     While chemical substances cause fatal gas burns in the
  12. lungs, germ warfare is designed to spawn epidemics of deadly
  13. diseases such as typhoid, cholera and anthrax. So far, there
  14. appears to be no evidence that Iraq has deployed germ warfare,
  15. despite allegations last September by Kurdish rebels that an
  16. outbreak of typhoid was caused by an Iraqi attack. But a
  17. purported document captured by Kurdish guerrillas a year ago
  18. refers to an inventory of "chemical and biological" materials in
  19. the hands of the Iraqi army. Dated Aug. 3, 1986, the document
  20. was released by London-based officials of the Kurdish
  21. Democratic Party.

  23.     According to Pentagon sources, Iraq is among at least nine
  24. nations developing biological weapons. The others: the Soviet
  25. Union, China, North Korea, Taiwan, Egypt, Israel, Iran and
  26. Syria.
